--------------------------------------------------------------------------------I have known the author, Harvey Austin, since 1986, when I became one of his patients, which in the end, a base for a continued friendship to this day.
Harvey has been walking around with this unique book in his head for years. Finally, he has written it and reading it I have discovered the book has revealed that "yes" we all have the same secrets, wounds, self-pity, and rebellious experiences. Reading this book, enables one to truly relate to the next person. "Everyone has their story" however, not many put it into words like Harvey.
As I read his book which has been offered for review, I felt like Harvey was right there in the room with me. The first few pages put you in a place of not being able to get to your scheduled tasks of the day because the words are masterfullly written from the heart, you wanted to reach out and soothe this "little boy's" pain.
The book is a true "page turner." You also realize that he is putting into words, what all of us have experienced (you feel he's been peeking into your soul) and that is if your parents say it or do it then it must be right and true. Harvey takes you on his journey, of luckily, unlike other youth, being born with a doubt and did something about it with great sacrifice. Eventually, with great determination, he found fullfillment many years down the road making the sacrifices worthwhile.
In the book, Harvey writes of choosing to go from having everything to going for nothing. Perhaps that is why he is is quite modest in his book regarding the lives he changed through his Cosmetic Surgery practice. He combined the physical changes to a patient with inner changes leading his patients to the Forum, wanting them to experience the same joyous experience, creating a complete transition. To many of us, (17 of my friends) his practice did not seem for financial gain. He was in it to change people's lives, his practice was that vehicle. This was much more tangible then anything material.
In the book he reveals one of his early jobs was being an Ice Cream Man.
Harvey, you are my favorite "Ice Cream Man." !

Elders Rock! Don't Just Get Older Become an Elder eBook Harvey W Austin Reviews
I have been very interested in aging both as a nurse and as a woman. Currently 77 in years, I have noticed that I am aging much slower in mind and spirit than many. I would have attributed it mostly to good luck and good genes but I also was fortunate to have done the est training almost 30 years ago. As described in this book it made a profound difference in my life. I now attribute my attituude and viytality to that progam , now called the Landmark Forum ,
I'm a bona fide purchaser of the book by Harvey Austin, "Elders Rock."
I have known Harvey for close to 40 years. Personally, I found his book illuminating and refreshing. Illuminating because he pierces through many of the illusions we have about relationships, what it means to be successful, and life itself. Refreshing, because he is candid and transparent about his journey of awakening without sugar coating his own ups and downs. Even for those of us who think we have it together, what he offers may challenge you to rethink many of your assumptions about the aging process. Advanced though we are in science and technology, we remain somewhat biased in our regard for those who are elders in our midst, for the enormous contributions and hard earned wisdom they embody. Ageism exists. But Elders are not disposable styrofoam cups. What can we do about it? Read the book, then share it with your loved ones!

A disclosure -- I've known Harvey since the early 80s, but i hadn't been in touch for a long time. Early this year, we spoke a couple of times on the phone about the topic of elders, and I knew he was writing a book, but I know a lot of people who are writing a book and I wasn't going to hold my breath. Much to my delight, a few months later - voila, there's the book! Not only that, he's done the topic justice. This is a book that needed to be written, and that needs to be read, not just by old folks to understand better and feel better about their journey, but for anyone who has a serious interest in contributing to our global society in general. That we've mostly lost the concept of elders contributing to the world needs to be addressed and a healing force is needed. There's a lot of wisdom here, and a good news gem for all of us.
This summer, of all summers, with its world-gone-mad vibe, is THE time to read a book with this much heart & heartfelt wisdom. Harvey M Austin is a true Elder, bringing a lifetime of experiences to a message that our culture - well, all cultures, but especially our living-in-the-dark American culture - needs to hear understand embrace. We are born to experience stages, not ages, of life; to be marked by abundance, not years. Harvey's book goes a long way to reintroduce a new respect for growing in experience & understanding, stepping us past the leaden dread of just growing old. More than an excellent book - warmly written, easily read, solo or (better yet) with others - it's a must-read for anyone who wants to embrace the wonders we're born to be & do, rather than the flat dull deadening whatever it is so many - too many - settle into accepting. "ELDERS ROCK!" is the perfect companion book for Ashton Applewhite's "THIS CHAIR ROCKS - a manifesto against aging." Exceptional individual reads that, brought together, put the POW! in the power of growing upward. We are in a time of great change, of revolutionary - evolutionary - overhauls to the dismal culture our country has constructed around growing aged in America. With Ashton as our Thomas Paine & Harvey as our George Washington - a wise Elder ready to lead to a wondrous outcome - victory will surely be ours! ELDERS ROCK! ~ read it - embrace it - live it!
