Master Ohshima began Martial Arts training when he was 3 years old, practicing Sumo, Judo, and Kendo, and from age 18 [1948] practicing Karate at Waseda University under the direct guidance of Master Gichin Funakoshi. Master Funakoshi was the first Karateka to introduce Karate in Tokyo at the beginning of the 1920s.
In 1955, in turn, Master Ohshima was first to introduce and teach Karate in the United States, a few years later in France and eventually worldwide.

Very enjoyable read.
An important story well told. Increased my appreciation for Sansei Ohshima and the art of the martial sage.
A badly needed biography of a true karate pioneer. Mr. Cohen has done a masterful job.
A needed and excellent history.
It is difficult to find the in-depth history of Tsutomu Ohshima, his early life, his years practicing under Master Funakoshi at Waseda University, and how he created the first Karate organization in America. You can appreciate the struggles and development of Karate as a true martial art. It is an outstanding book.
This is an outstanding work. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in martial arts or Japanese budo culture. It should be required reading for all of Ohshima Sensei's students. May of us who have had the high privilege of practicing under his instruction for many years still do not really understand his level. This book provides many such insights and much inspiration to move forward in our practice.
I bought two copies as soon as it was published, one for study and the other as a memento. I am very happy that I finally got a chance to read this book about Grand Master Tsutomu Ohshima as thoroughly as I could, page by page. This book is a TREASURE BOX filled with glittering gems. I learned about Ohshima Sensei, his way of life, and through the stories and explanations, I could learn and enjoy deep understanding of Bushido's philosophy and its implementation in daily life in the 21st century (as the title says). I have been practicing and teaching karate for 30 years, and now this book gave my training a much deeper meaning. I feel incredibly lucky to find this book!
